Chennai: The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested seven fishermen from Tamil Nadu for allegedly crossing the international maritime border. According to reports, the fishermen were allegedly fishing in Sri Lankan waters, prompting the Navy to take action.

Incident near Neduntheevu

The incident occurred near Neduntheevu, where the fishermen were fishing with their two boats. The Sri Lankan Navy intercepted and detained them and took them to the Kankesanthurai Naval Base for questioning.

Two boats also seized

The two boats have been seized along with the arrested fishermen. Sri Lankan authorities are currently interrogating them and preparations are underway for further legal action.

Such incidents are occurring frequently

This is nothing new for Tamil Nadu fishermen. Such incidents are frequent in the Palk Bay and Palk Strait regions. This area is very close to the maritime border between India and Sri Lanka, where fishermen often inadvertently cross the border.

Border Dispute and Fishermen's Troubles

Fishermen say that due to unclear maritime boundaries and a lack of adequate technical equipment, they sometimes cross into Sri Lankan waters. This results in them facing problems such as arrest and boat confiscation.

Call for Government Intervention

Following this incident, the fishermen's families and local organizations have demanded intervention from the central and state governments. They have appealed to ensure the fishermen's release as soon as possible and find a permanent solution to this issue.
