Congress Sweeps Telangana Municipal Polls; Wins 68 Civic Bodies

Ruling Congress party in Telengana dominated the Municipal election results today by winning 68 of the 116 municipalities and 4 of the 7 Corporations. BJP ‘s performance was disappointing while the BRS put up a better fight than expected. One interesting aspect of the results was 34 municipalities and 3 Corporations were ended up in hung, with no party getting clear majority.

Hyderabad: Ruling Congress displayed a commanding performance in the Telengana Municipal elections winning 68 municipalities and Four Corporations. The main opposition, regional party BRS ( Bharat Rastriya Samithi), however, put up a better than anticipated fight but ended up losing many municipalities. It could retain only 13 municipalities.

On the other, the BJP ended up in disappointing performance without winning a single Municipality of the total 116 municipalities. It may win one Corporation, that is Karimnagar, from where Union Home Minister of State, Bandi Sanjay belonged.

Hectic lobbying and holding of Separate camps by the major parties is in full swing, for the Hung municipalities and Corporations. On 16th February, Mayor and Municipal Chair persons would be elected. 34 municipalities and 3 Corporations ended up in Hung, with no party winning clear majority.

With these Municipal results, ruling Congress in Telengana further consolidated itself. The latest victory in the municipal polls adds to its success in the Assembly. Parliament and Panchayat elections, apart from winning Two Assembly by elections in the state.

In other words, Congress party has continued its electoral winning streak in Telengana for the Fourth consecutive time in the past two years, reinforcing its growing political dominance since it wrested power from BRS in the 2023 Assembly elections. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy who led the campaign, has also further consolidated his position within the party in the state.
