Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay is at the centre of political attention after meeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over lunch in Chennai on Saturday, a day before his scheduled metro ride with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The back-to-back engagements with two prominent national leaders have sparked discussion about Vijay’s political strategy and Tamil Nadu’s changing political landscape.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi arrived in this state capital on October 10 to attend the sixth edition of the Congress party’s youth outreach programme, Chhatron Ki Goonj, also known in Tamil as Maanavargalin Kural.

Before attending the event, organised by the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) at Island Grounds, Gandhi visited Vijay’s residence in Neelankarai, where the two leaders held a private meeting lasting around an hour.

Following the meeting, Vijay and Rahul Gandhi travelled together in the same car to a cafe in Palavakkam. Reports said they had coffee and dessert and interacted with people who gathered around them. The informal outing attracted attention on social media, with photographs and videos of the leaders becoming a talking point.

The meeting comes at an important time for Tamil Nadu politics, as Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the Congress work together under a new political arrangement. Their discussions have not been made public, and neither side has confirmed whether the meeting covered future election plans or broader political coordination.

Rahul Gandhi Meets Vijay After Congress Backs TVK

The meeting between Rahul Gandhi and Vijay comes after a major realignment in Tamil Nadu politics. The Congress ended its long-standing alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and extended support to Vijay’s TVK government following the Assembly election.

TVK emerged as the largest party in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, winning 120 seats, according to the reported election figures. Support from the Congress helped the party cross the majority threshold and form the government.

The two parties are working together under the Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance, which also includes the Indian Union Muslim League and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi. The new arrangement has placed Vijay at the head of the state government while the Congress seeks to strengthen its political position in Tamil Nadu.

The Chennai meeting was their first reported interaction since the alliance was formally announced. It also followed TVK’s reported victories in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly bypolls, giving the meeting added political significance.

Although Congress sources described the meeting as a courtesy call, its timing has fuelled speculation about how the two parties intend to coordinate their political priorities.

From Rahul Gandhi’s Lunch to PM Modi’s Metro Ride

Vijay’s schedule has attracted particular attention because he is expected to join Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a Chennai Metro event on October 11. Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the first operational section of Chennai Metro Phase II, covering the 14.64-kilometre Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch. The prime minister and the Tamil Nadu chief minister are also expected to travel by metro from Poonamallee to Porur as part of the programme.

The event is primarily an official infrastructure engagement focused on public transport and urban connectivity. However, Vijay’s appearance alongside Modi comes just a day after his meeting with Rahul Gandhi, creating a striking political contrast.

For the BJP, the joint public appearance offers an opportunity to engage visibly with one of Tamil Nadu’s most prominent political figures in a state where the party has struggled to establish a strong independent base. For Vijay, the engagement is part of his role as chief minister, who must work with the Union government on infrastructure and administrative matters.

The two meetings do not, by themselves, indicate any change in political alliances. Instead, they highlight the different responsibilities and political relationships Vijay must manage as head of the Tamil Nadu government.

Is Vijay Balancing State Politics and National Alliances?

Vijay’s engagements with Rahul Gandhi and Narendra Modi have prompted questions about how he will balance his relationship with the Congress-led opposition camp and the BJP-led Union government.

The Congress is a political partner of the TVK in Tamil Nadu, and its support played an important role in the formation of Vijay’s government. At the same time, the state government must coordinate with the Centre on infrastructure, public transport, funding and other administrative matters.

A meeting with the prime minister in an official capacity is therefore not necessarily a signal of a political shift. Similarly, the lunch with Rahul Gandhi does not automatically confirm any new agreement beyond the existing partnership.

However, the timing of the two engagements has made Vijay’s political positioning a subject of discussion. His ability to maintain cooperation with the Congress while engaging with the Union government could become an important factor in the functioning of his administration.

The meetings also reflect the changing political calculations in Tamil Nadu following the Assembly election, which altered established relationships among the state’s major parties.

Rahul Gandhi and Vijay’s Political Equation Under the Spotlight

The Congress–TVK relationship also faces questions about national leadership and the ambitions of both parties. Some TVK voices have projected Vijay as a potential national leader and possible prime ministerial candidate for the 2029 general election. Congress leaders, meanwhile, have maintained that Rahul Gandhi remains their preferred choice for the prime minister’s post.

Tamil Nadu Congress president Manickam Tagore has backed Rahul Gandhi as the party’s choice. These differing political messages could become a point of discussion as the two parties continue to work together.

There has been no official confirmation that Rahul Gandhi and Vijay discussed the prime ministerial question during their Chennai meeting. The details of their conversation remain private. For now, the immediate focus is on maintaining the Congress–TVK partnership in Tamil Nadu while allowing both parties to retain their separate national political positions.

Rahul Gandhi’s Chhatron Ki Goonj Programme Focuses on Students

Rahul Gandhi’s Chennai visit was organised around Chhatron Ki Goonj, a student outreach programme conducted by the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee at Island Grounds. The event is also known by its Tamil name, Maanavargalin Kural.

The programme is designed as an interactive session in which students can raise questions and discuss concerns directly with the Congress leader, rather than attending a conventional political rally dominated by speeches.

The main issues include the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), unemployment, the rising cost of education, women’s education, competitive examinations and the Union government’s education policy. The event is also intended to give young people a platform to discuss career uncertainty and access to educational opportunities.

The Congress promoted the programme through banners, flyers and digital posters across Chennai and college campuses. Its publicity campaign used both Hindi and Tamil branding, with messaging aimed at encouraging students to participate and raise questions.

Organisers said registrations were being collected through a website and QR codes circulated across Tamil Nadu. Reports cited more than one lakh registrations or expressions of interest, while other estimates put the number of students expected to attend at around 10,000 to 20,000.

These figures represent different estimates of registration and expected participation, rather than a confirmed final attendance count. The programme forms part of the Congress’s broader effort to engage young voters and bring education and employment concerns into its political outreach.

Heavy Security Arrangements Across Chennai

Security was tightened across Chennai ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s programme on Saturday and Narendra Modi’s visit scheduled for Sunday. Reports described a multi-layered security deployment involving around 15,000 police personnel, led by Chennai Police Commissioner A Amalraj. The arrangements included surveillance, vehicle inspections and increased patrols near important routes and event locations.

Entry to the Island Grounds student programme was restricted to registered participants with valid QR codes. Separate entry corridors were planned for men and women, while general public access to the event was restricted to maintain crowd control and security.

Police and intelligence teams also reportedly increased checks at lodges and along important transit routes as part of preventive security measures. The security arrangements covered the event venue, the movement of visiting leaders and routes expected to be used by dignitaries.

The Prime Minister’s scheduled appearance on October 11 added to the security requirements across the city. Gandhi was expected to leave Island Grounds at around 8:30 pm and travel to Chennai airport to board a scheduled 9:40 pm flight to New Delhi.

Delhi Protests Form Part of the Wider Political Context

Rahul Gandhi’s Chennai visit also took place against the backdrop of political tension in Delhi, where police action against protesters and the reported detention of opposition leaders drew criticism from Congress leaders.

Gandhi had posted on social media that the Chief Election Commissioner would leave office and that the government would eventually change, after which efforts to restore democracy could begin. Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh also criticised the handling of demonstrations over alleged concerns about electoral-roll revision and voting rights.

The opposition has alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, while the Election Commission maintains that the process is intended to verify and update voter lists.

The developments in Delhi added to the broader political backdrop of Gandhi’s Chennai visit, although the private meeting with Vijay was primarily notable for its timing amid the evolving Congress–TVK relationship.

The Meetings Create Buzz in Tamil Nadu Politics

Vijay’s meetings with Rahul Gandhi and Narendra Modi have put Tamil Nadu’s changing political equations in the spotlight. The Congress is an important partner of the TVK government, while the state administration must also work with the Centre on major infrastructure and governance projects.

The lunch meeting with Rahul Gandhi highlights the political partnership between the Congress and TVK. The scheduled metro ride with Modi, meanwhile, reflects Vijay’s official engagement with the Union government.

Whether the meetings lead to any further political coordination remains unclear. Neither the discussions with Rahul Gandhi nor the planned engagement with Modi should be interpreted as evidence of a change in alliances without further confirmation.

For now, the sequence of events underlines Vijay’s emerging role in state and national politics. As his government settles into office, the chief minister’s ability to manage relationships with different political leaders while focusing on governance will remain under close observation.
