Thiruvananthapuram: Congress veteran leader Mani Shankar Aiyar continued his praise for Kerala's CPM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and stepped up personal attacks against Congress leaders for his comment that Vijayan would return to power for a third term.
Interestingly, Aiyar continues to praise Left Front Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, stating he would return to power for a third term. This was at the three-day Kerala Vision 2031 international conference, which concluded on Tuesday, as per Dynamite News correspondent.
Aiyar came down heavily on AICC general secretary and Lok Sabha member K C Venugopal and other senior leaders. He also claimed that the media exaggerated his Sunday comments. Reacting to Congress leaders’ response that he was not connected with the Congress party these days and is no longer a Congressman, Aiyar said he had yet to receive a letter of expulsion from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
His statements continued to embarrass the Congress in the run-up to the Kerala Assembly polls. “Being a Congressman, I would like to see the Congress win the election. But as a Gandhian, I can only tell the truth. I made my remarks about the Communist government in Kerala after learning the achievements made by the state as envisioned by late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi,” said Aiyar while addressing the media.
However, speaking to a section of the media, Aiyar came down heavily on Venugopal, Ramesh Chennithala and MP Shashi Tharoor. He called Venugopal a “goon” and Tharoor an “opportunist.” He further said, “I have never met a more unprincipled careerist than Shashi Tharoor who, because Congress did not make him the foreign minister, is now trying to become Modi’s foreign minister. The Congress party was built on principles, not on opportunism.”
Aiyar also took aim at Pawan Khera, referring to the Congress national spokesperson as a “tattu” (pony) who takes directions from Jairam Ramesh. Aiyar was reacting when asked about a social media post by Pawan Khera distancing the party from his remarks.
However, Aiyar praised Kerala Congress Opposition leader V D Satheesan as a secular socialist leader in the Congress. He also said that Congress leaders were divided, while CPM leaders were quite disciplined.
