Coimbatore: A 19-year-old NEET aspirant died in Coimbatore on Wednesday, just four days before the NEET UG re-examination scheduled for June 21. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. No suicide note was recovered from the scene, according to initial reports.
The re-examination was ordered following allegations of a question paper leak, and the incident has drawn widespread attention across the region.
The student's death sparked protests in Coimbatore, with several groups demanding justice and support for the bereaved family. Members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] gathered at the ESI Hospital and called on authorities to provide adequate relief to the family.
Protesters stated that the family was seeking appropriate action and accountability in connection with the incident. Demonstrators also highlighted concerns about the pressure faced by students preparing for highly competitive examinations.
The deceased, identified as Anu Keerthana, was the daughter of Senthil Prabhu, president of the Coimbatore District TASMAC Employees' Union.
Following her death, her body was initially taken to a private hospital before being shifted to the Coimbatore ESI Hospital for post-mortem examination. Officials are continuing their investigation into the case.
During the protest, CPI(M) leaders and supporters raised concerns about the mental and emotional burden experienced by students preparing for competitive entrance examinations.
They urged authorities to extend all necessary support to the family and examine the circumstances surrounding the student's death. The incident has also renewed discussions about the pressures associated with high-stakes examinations and the need for stronger student support systems.
