Chennai: A new welfare initiative for newborn babies is set to begin in Tamil Nadu as Chief Minister Joseph Vijay launches the Thaaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam on Monday. Under the scheme, babies born in government hospitals across the state will receive a one-gram, 22-carat gold ring as a special government gift.
The launch will take place at Madurai’s Government Rajaji Hospital, where CM Vijay will distribute gold rings to 25 newborns during the inaugural event. The scheme has attracted attention because of its unique approach of combining a welfare benefit with an emotional gesture for families welcoming a child.
The Tamil Nadu government has stated that the initiative is designed to encourage safe institutional deliveries, increase confidence in government healthcare facilities and create a memorable connection between families and public health services.
According to officials, Chief Minister Joseph Vijay will reach Madurai by a special flight and inaugurate the scheme at the Government Rajaji Hospital auditorium.
During his visit, the Chief Minister is also scheduled to go to the maternity ward and personally present rings to newborn babies delivered at the hospital.
The first phase of the programme will focus on distributing prepared gold rings, with the government planning a statewide rollout after the initial launch event.
The scheme was earlier planned for September 15, marking the birth anniversary of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C N Annadurai. However, the launch was postponed due to CM Vijay’s overseas visit to London.
Under the Thaaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam, every eligible newborn delivered at government hospitals in Tamil Nadu will receive a one-gram, 22-carat gold ring.
The eligibility criteria require the mother of the newborn to be a permanent resident of Tamil Nadu.
The gold rings will come with unique serial numbers and will be distributed in tamper-proof packaging to ensure transparency and prevent misuse.
The government has planned implementation across the state, except areas under the Maduranthakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies due to upcoming bypolls scheduled on October 6.
The Tamil Nadu government has allocated an annual budget of around Rs 755 crore for the welfare programme.
Officials said nearly 1.28 lakh gold rings have already been prepared during the first phase of implementation.
With approximately 7.80 lakh children born in Tamil Nadu every year, the scheme is expected to cover a large number of families through government healthcare institutions.
The initiative has been positioned as a major social welfare measure focused on maternal and child welfare.
Beyond the symbolic value of gold, the government has linked the scheme with improving awareness about safe deliveries in government hospitals.
Officials believe the initiative could encourage more families to choose public healthcare centres for childbirth by providing additional support and recognition to mothers.
