Hyderabad: Roughly about 3.5 crore electorates in Telengana are going to exercise their vote on 11th February for the Municipal pollls in the state. Week long, hectic and high pitchecd campaign ended for the 116 Municipalities and Seven Corporations.
Congress, BJP, BRS and AIMIM are the major parties which have pitched their candidates. Counting of Votes would be taken up on 13th February. After oath of administration for elected ward members, indirect elections for Mayor/ chairperson or Deputy Mayor / vice chairman posts will be held on February 16.
State Election Commissioner Rani Kumudini on Tuesday reviewed the law and order situation and the arrangements for the election with District Collector's, SPs and Police Commissioners in their respective areas.
Week long campaign in the state witnessed major political parties indulging in blame game and criticising each other. During the last Municipal election in 2020, BRS led by KCR dominated the election. Though BJP had won 8 lok sabha seats in the state during 2024 polls, it has weakened considerably due to internal groupism . BRS lost power in the state in 2023, also weakened. AIMIM led by Owisi brothers are focusing on muslim dominated areas.
one significant feature of this local body polls is that, according to the state Election Commission report, a total of 6, 877 women candidates are in the fray across the districts. This makes women a formidable presence in the polls, reflecting the deepening impact of reservation policies for women in local governance. Out of the total 6,877 , an overwhelming 6184 women candidates are married, constituting nearly 90 per cent of all women in the race.
