Cylinder blast in Thanjavur

Thanjavur: At least 10 people, including a 15-year-old girl, became seriously burnt after a cooking cylinder exploded while they were trying to extinguish a fire at a thatched house in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district early on Thursday morning. Seven of those injured are in critical condition under treatment in the ICU, police said.

What happened

The fire erupted, police said, around 2am at the thatched house of Murugayan, a farmer in the Lakshmipuram area. The house, on Chinna Ammankudi near Thiruvonam, belonged to his family. The family had gone to sleep when the fire broke out.
On seeing the flames, some of the neighbours rushed to the farmer and on warning them of the happening, helped them escape to safety. Many others from the area were seen running towards the house with a water bucket to fight the fire before help could be called. At that instant, the cooking gas cylinder, which lay at the house, exploded.

Farmer and daughter among the injured

Both Murugayan and his 15-year-old daughter, Abhinaya, were badly burnt in the explosion. Considering all those who ran towards the house with their bucket of water, many among them were also badly burnt.
Kasinathan, Rajasekhar, Palanivel, Vembaiyan, Kalaiyarasi, Bhuvaneshwaran, Selvaraj and Kaliammal have been reported as injured. Many of them have deep burns due to the force of the explosion.

An eyewitness describes the panic

Durgadevi, a resident, described the pandemonium that ensued after the bang. Families hurried to get their children away from danger while the men stayed behind to keep the fire down with water. No one realised there was a gas cylinder in the house, and the bang that sent it off startled everyone. The resident said a few people have burns over 80 per cent of their bodies.

Seven moved to ICU, police investigating

Fire and rescue teams from Karambakudi reached the site and helped to evacuate the wounded before sending them to hospitals. Three were transferred to Pattukottai Government Hospital, and seven, the more seriously injured, were taken to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital in 108 ambulances. All seven are presently on close medical observation.
The police at Thiruvonam have filed a case and have begun investigations into the exact reason for the fire and the subsequent explosion of the cylinder.

Extra security at the hospital

Police officers have been deploying at the emergency ward of Thanjavur Medical College Hospital since a large number of relatives and local residents start gathering there. When the news of the incident spread, they keep a careful eye on the patients, who are seriously injured.
