Chennai: A major industrial accident in Tamil Nadu's Thiruvallur district claimed the lives of two workers and left several others in critical condition after an ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing facility on Sunday.
The incident took place at a seafood export unit located in Kannigaipair near Periyapalayam. Authorities said dozens of workers were affected by the leak, with many requiring immediate medical attention.
According to preliminary information, employees inside the facility began experiencing symptoms such as breathing problems, dizziness and vomiting shortly after the leak occurred. Emergency services were rushed to the location as workers were evacuated and transported to nearby hospitals.
Several ambulances were deployed to shift the affected individuals for treatment. Medical officials reported that a number of workers remain under observation, while some are receiving intensive care support.
Initial findings suggest that the gas may have escaped from a valve connected to the plant's operational system. Authorities have begun examining the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine the exact cause of the leak.
Officials are expected to conduct a detailed inquiry into safety procedures and maintenance protocols at the facility.
Hospital sources indicated that a significant number of workers were admitted for treatment following exposure to the gas. Some patients were reported to be in serious condition, prompting close medical monitoring.
Most of the affected employees are believed to be migrant workers employed at the processing unit.
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar expressed grief over the tragedy and extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. He also wished a speedy recovery to workers undergoing treatment.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns surrounding industrial safety and emergency preparedness at manufacturing and processing facilities. Authorities continue to monitor the situation while investigations into the cause of the leak remain underway.
