New Delhi: On Monday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay issued directives for the complete renovation and modernization of Amma Unavagam (Amma Canteens) across the state. This move is regarded as a significant initiative aimed at providing affordable, hygienic, and high-quality food to the poor and the general public.
Amma Canteens to be Modernized
The Chief Minister held a meeting with senior government officials and issued strict instructions to upgrade the basic amenities at Amma Canteens, immediately procure modern kitchen equipment, and ensure an uninterrupted supply of hygienic food.
He clarified that the expenses for renovation and equipment procurement would be borne exclusively by the general funds of the respective corporations and municipalities.
How Many Canteens Are Currently Operational?
It is worth noting that currently, 383 Amma Canteens are operating under the Greater Chennai Corporation, while another 237 canteens are functioning across other corporations and municipalities in the state. These canteens were originally launched by former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa with the objective of providing affordable food to the poor.
Improvements in Operations
Modernizing these facilities will now enhance their capacity and improve the quality of service. Under this scheme, the canteens will be equipped with better seating arrangements, modern kitchens, sanitation equipment, and improved ventilation systems.
