New Delhi: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Wednesday during his first official visit to the national capital since taking office earlier this month. The meeting marked an important political moment for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader, who recently transitioned from cinema to state leadership after leading his alliance to victory in the Assembly elections.

During the meeting, Vijay presented a memorandum highlighting several pending demands related to Tamil Nadu’s development and welfare priorities. The discussions focused on financial assistance from the Centre, approvals for infrastructure projects and issues concerning interstate water sharing.

Mekedatu Water Dispute Raised in Meeting

One of the major topics discussed was the long-standing Mekedatu dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Tamil Nadu has consistently opposed Karnataka’s proposed balancing reservoir project across the Cauvery river, arguing that it could impact the state’s rightful share of water.

Vijay urged the Centre to safeguard Tamil Nadu’s interests under the Cauvery tribunal framework and reiterated the state government’s opposition to granting clearance for the project. The issue continues to remain politically sensitive in both states and is closely linked to water security concerns in Tamil Nadu.

Focus on Infrastructure and Central Support

The Tamil Nadu government also sought increased financial backing for welfare schemes and ongoing development initiatives. Requests were made for quicker approvals related to urban infrastructure, transportation projects and industrial expansion plans aimed at boosting economic growth in the state.

Apart from meeting the Prime Minister, Vijay is expected to hold separate discussions with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He is also likely to meet senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi during his stay in Delhi as part of broader political consultations.
