New Delhi: Kartik Purnima is celebrated every year on the full moon day of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) of the month of Kartik. This entire month is considered extremely auspicious for worshipping Lord Vishnu. According to the Hindu calendar, Kartik Purnima is considered the most sacred full moon of the year. It is also known as Tripurari Purnima or Ganga Snan. Religious belief holds that Lord Shiva killed the demon Tripurasura on this day, hence the name Tripura Purnima. It is also considered an auspicious occasion for the appearance of Lord Vishnu's Matsya avatar. This year, the Kartik Purnima fast and bathing festival will be observed on November 5, 2025. According to astrologers, certain mistakes should be avoided on this day, otherwise one will not receive the Lord's blessings. 1. Tamasic Food On Kartik Purnima, one should avoid consuming tamasic food items such as meat, alcohol, onions, garlic, etc., even by mistake. Consuming all these things is considered very inauspicious on this day. 2. Don't sleep late in the morning On Kartik Purnima, it is customary to wake up in the Brahma Muhurta, take a bath, and worship God. Waking up late reduces the auspicious effects of the day. 3. Avoid Anger or Arguments It is important to keep a calm mind on Kartik Purnima. Fighting or misbehaving with anyone on this day diminishes the benefits of the puja. 4. Don't Break Tulsi Plants On Kartik Purnima, one should avoid breaking Tulsi leaves even by mistake. Doing so angers Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. In fact, Tulsi Mata is worshipped on Kartik Purnima. 5. Don't Forget to Light a Lamp Dev Diwali is also celebrated on the evening of Kartik Purnima. Therefore, be sure to light a lamp in the name of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva in the evening on this day. This will ward off negativity. 6. Perform charitable acts On Kartik Purnima, do not turn anyone away from your door empty-handed or insult the poor. Doing so will anger Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Lakshmi.
