New Delhi: After Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test cricket, there has been a lot of discussion about the new Test captain of the Indian cricket team. For some time now, Shubman Gill's name has been emerging as the most prominent contender for this role.

The selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar has started looking for a permanent captain for the upcoming Test series, and Gill is considered to be the ideal candidate for this responsibility, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

Although the selection committee has not yet made any formal announcement in this regard, some reports have claimed that Gill is the frontrunner to become the next Test captain.

Meanwhile, former India opener Wasim Jaffer has also given his opinion on who should be appointed as the next captain of Test cricket. Jaffer wrote on his 'X' (formerly Twitter) account that, "I think it would be best to make Bumrah the captain, as long as he is ready to take this responsibility."

Jaffer believes that if Bumrah is ready to take on the role of captaincy, he should be made the captain of the Test team, and Shubman Gill should be made the vice-captain. He says that in this way Gill will not have the pressure of captaincy, and he will gradually be able to prepare for this role.

Bumrah's name also comes up in the race for captaincy because he has captained some important Test matches for India. During the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah captained the Perth Test, and India won that match. However, there is some concern about Bumrah's fitness, as he recently suffered a back injury, and this raises questions about his availability on the England tour.

Apart from this, the names of KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant have also come up for Test captaincy. Rahul led India in the Test series against Bangladesh in December 2022, and under his captaincy, India won the series 2–0.

Rahul is also considered a strong candidate for this role. At the same time, Rishabh Pant's name is also in the news, as many people consider him the future captain due to his aggressive batting and leadership ability.

The next Test series for India is to start against England from June 20 at Headingley, in which a total of five Test matches will be played. India has not won any Test series in England since 2007, and this time this series is considered very important for the team.

The role of the captain becomes even more important in this series, as the Indian team will have to improve its performance and strengthen its position in Test cricket. Let us see and wait what decision the selection committee takes and which player is selected as India's Test captain.
