Manchester: Manchester United FC Manager Michael Carrick has reaffirmed Bruno Fernandes' position as club captain, dismissing speculation of a breakdown in their relationship following a public disagreement over the team's tactics. Carrick said the Portuguese midfielder remained fully committed to the club and would continue to lead the side.
The clarification comes after tensions surfaced between the manager and his captain following United's disappointing 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League. Fernandes had publicly questioned the team's approach during the match, prompting a pointed response from Carrick and eventually leading to the midfielder being left out of the starting line-up for the subsequent Premier League fixture against Bournemouth.
Speaking at his press conference ahead of Saturday's encounter against Chelsea, Carrick made it clear that there was no question of removing Fernandes from the captaincy.
"Bruno is fully committed to this football club, and there are absolutely no issues. We move forward, make decisions as we go, and focus on Saturday's game," Carrick said.
He acknowledged the midfielder's contribution to the team over the years, adding that Fernandes had led Manchester United through several challenging periods and would continue to shoulder that responsibility.
The manager also indicated that the differences between the two had been addressed through discussions, allowing the club to move beyond the controversy.
The disagreement emerged after Manchester United suffered a 4-1 defeat against Como in the Champions League. Fernandes, speaking after the match, expressed reservations about the team's defensive approach and suggested that United should have adopted a more aggressive pressing strategy.
The Portuguese international argued that allowing opponents too much possession gave them confidence and made it increasingly difficult for United to regain control of the game.
When asked whether the team's tactics had contributed to the defeat, Fernandes said the responsibility for such decisions rested with the manager and his coaching staff.
Carrick subsequently responded by emphasising that tactical instructions could only be effective if players demonstrated the required work rate, both while attacking and defending. He maintained that players had to run and work collectively, irrespective of the system being employed.
The exchange raised questions about the relationship between the manager and the club captain, particularly after Carrick left Fernandes on the bench for United's 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth. The midfielder remained an unused substitute in that match.
Carrick described the selection decision as a footballing call, insisting that his priority was to choose a side capable of delivering the required performance.
Reports subsequently indicated that the two held discussions at the club's training ground to resolve their differences. The conversations were understood to have helped ease the tension, with both parties agreeing to concentrate on improving the team's performances.
The Fernandes controversy has unfolded against the backdrop of an increasingly difficult spell for Manchester United.
The defeat to Bournemouth extended the club's winless run across competitions to eight matches. United were placed 16th in the Premier League standings, just one point clear of the relegation zone, intensifying scrutiny over Carrick's position.
Senior club officials reportedly held discussions about the manager's future following Sunday's defeat. However, no decision was announced, and Carrick has continued in charge of the first team.
Asked whether he needed assurances from the club hierarchy about his position, the 45-year-old dismissed the suggestion.
"I totally get the position. I understand the job, I understand the responsibilities, I understand what comes with that, so I really don't need any assurances from anyone in that regard," he said.
Carrick had initially brought stability to Manchester United after taking over from Ruben Amorim in January. Under his stewardship, the club finished third in the Premier League last season, raising expectations about a sustained revival.
However, the team's performances this campaign have fallen short of those standards. United have not registered a Premier League victory since defeating newly promoted Ipswich Town on August 30.
With the Chelsea fixture approaching, Carrick will be hoping that the resolution of the Fernandes dispute helps restore some stability within the dressing room and allows the team to concentrate on reversing its poor run of results. For now, the manager has made his position clear: Fernandes retains the captain's armband, and the responsibility of leading Manchester United remains with him.
