Chennai: The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has denied reports claiming that former captain MS Dhoni attempted to buy a stake in the IPL franchise, saying no such discussion took place with the legendary cricketer. However, Dhoni does have a financial connection with CSK, as reports indicate that he owns more than one lakh shares in the franchise through private off-market transactions.
Speculation around MS Dhoni becoming a bigger stakeholder in Chennai Super Kings gained attention after reports suggested that the former India captain had shown interest in purchasing a part of the franchise. A senior CSK official, however, rejected the claims and said that Dhoni had never approached the management regarding any stake purchase. The official clarified that no discussions had taken place between Dhoni and CSK management or with franchise owner N Srinivasan over such a proposal.
Although Dhoni has not made any reported attempt to buy a major stake in CSK, he is not completely disconnected from the franchise’s ownership structure. According to available information, Dhoni acquired shares when they were offered for private purchase. Since CSK is an unlisted company, its shares are not available through regular stock market trading, but can be transferred through off-market deals. The former captain reportedly owns over one lakh shares in the franchise. However, compared to CSK’s overall shareholding, his ownership remains a small portion.
With IPL franchise valuations reaching record levels, Dhoni’s stake could be worth several crores. Based on current IPL team valuations, his shareholding is estimated to be worth around Rs 2.6 crore to Rs 3 crore. The amount remains relatively small compared to Dhoni’s massive earnings from international cricket, IPL contracts, business investments and brand endorsements.
The former Indian captain is among the richest cricketers globally, with his net worth estimated at around Rs 1,200 crore.
Despite stepping down as CSK captain and missing the entire previous season, MS Dhoni continues to remain an influential figure within the franchise. CSK management is reportedly waiting for Dhoni’s return before making key decisions, including finalising the team’s next head coach. Dhoni is currently believed to be in the United States and is expected to return around September 22, 2026.
Once Dhoni returns, CSK officials are expected to hold discussions regarding the coaching setup, player transfers and future team strategy. While the franchise has maintained that no coach has been finalised yet, sources suggest that CSK has shortlisted an overseas candidate who is also reportedly in talks with another IPL team.
The final decision is expected after discussions involving Dhoni and the top CSK management.
