Pakistan’s Fragile Hosting Record
Pakistan hosted the 2025 Champions Trophy, its first ICC event after 29 long years, which marked a major comeback. Before that, Pakistan last hosted an ICC tournament during the 1996 World Cup.
Even then, concerns about safety, logistics, and consistency have always surrounded Pakistan’s hosting credentials. Many cricketing nations already believe Pakistan has been given hosting rights far less frequently than others.

Backing Out Despite a Clear Agreement
India and Pakistan had already reached a clear agreement: neither team would tour the other’s country for ICC events. Instead, matches would be played at neutral venues under a hybrid model. This model worked smoothly during the Champions Trophy, where India played its matches in Dubai, despite Pakistan being the official host.
Similarly, in the India–Sri Lanka co-hosted T20 World Cup, Pakistan was set to play all its matches in Sri Lanka. Despite this pre-agreed arrangement, Pakistan still chose to withdraw from the India match, which many see as a breach of trust.
ICC Could Take a Strong Stand
By pulling out after agreeing to the hybrid model, Pakistan has put the ICC in a difficult position. Such unpredictability affects broadcasters, sponsors, and fans worldwide. To avoid future disruptions, the ICC may consider banning Pakistan from hosting future tournaments altogether.
India’s Past Boycott Was Different
In July 2025, Indian players refused to play Pakistan in the World Championship of Legends, but that event was not organized by the ICC. Importantly, India has never refused to play Pakistan in any ICC tournament, maintaining its commitments despite political tensions.
The Bigger Consequence for Pakistan Cricket
What appears to be a political decision could turn into a long-term sporting disaster for Pakistan. By backing out at the last moment, Pakistan risks losing its chance to host ICC events permanently—an outcome that could harm its cricketing future far more than skipping one high-profile match.
