Mumbai: Sanju Samson responded to the intense debate surrounding India’s T20I opening options after producing a spectacular 57 off 22 balls against Afghanistan in the first T20I. Samson opened alongside Abhishek Sharma and helped India chase down Afghanistan’s 160-run target with remarkable ease. The pair added 88 runs for the opening wicket before India completed the chase in just 14.5 overs.
Samson’s blistering innings also came at a time when his place in the opening combination has been discussed extensively following the emergence of teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The 15-year-old batsman has become one of the major talking points around India’s T20 setup, leading to comparisons between him, Samson and Abhishek for the available opening positions.
After being asked about the competition for two opening slots, Samson made it clear that he does not view his fellow teammates as rivals within the Indian dressing room. According to Samson, the competition exists largely in public discussions. Inside the team, the priority remains winning matches for India rather than worrying about individual opportunities. He explained that players cannot allow disappointment over selection or batting positions to affect their mindset because such negativity does not help the team.
Samson’s comments came amid considerable discussion on social media and among former Indian cricketers about who should occupy India’s opening positions.
The emergence of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has added another layer to India’s selection discussions. Several opinions have surfaced over whether the teenage batsman should replace Samson or Abhishek Sharma in the playing XI. Samson admitted that although he tries to stay away from online discussions, it is difficult for players to remain completely insulated from comments made by former cricketers and other prominent voices.
He said outside opinions can affect Indian cricketers, but players need to maintain clarity about their preparation and approach to the game.
Samson also acknowledged that criticism and external expectations have affected him during his career. The wicketkeeper-batter stressed that cricketers are human and cannot simply switch off their emotions. He said he has become more experienced at dealing with outside pressure, although certain comments can still have an impact.
For Samson, the key is preventing those distractions from entering his mind while batting. He indicated that constantly thinking about how a dismissal might trigger another round of criticism would only make it harder to perform freely on the field.
With Samson and Abhishek having opened in the first two matches of the series, attention will now turn to India’s combination for the final game. Captain Shreyas Iyer has reportedly provided a significant indication about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s possible return to the playing XI, which could force a change at the top of the order.
That possibility has intensified the debate surrounding India’s opening pair, with Samson’s latest performance adding another talking point to the selection discussion.
