Sumit Nagal leads India’s charge as medal celebrations continue at Aichi-Nagoya (Images: X)
Aichi-Nagoya (Japan): Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal continued his impressive run at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, securing a place in the men’s singles quarterfinals after a dominant straight-set victory on Wednesday. Nagal defeated Uzbekistan’s Sergey Fomin 6-3, 6-2 to move into the last eight of the competition. The Indian player currently ranked 249th in the ATP rankings and a former world No. 68, displayed strong control and consistency throughout the match.
Nagal will now face China’s Wu Yibing in the quarterfinal clash. Wu, who won the silver medal at the 2018 Asian Games, is expected to provide a tough challenge for the Indian tennis player. Meanwhile, India’s Dhakshineswar Suresh exited the men’s singles event after losing his match against Chinese Taipei’s Tseng Chun-hsin.
India also witnessed a record-breaking performance in sports climbing as Deepu Mallesh rewrote the national record four times during the men’s speed qualification event. Mallesh clocked 5.09 seconds to finish 11th among 16 participants and booked his place in the quarterfinals. His previous national record was 5.39 seconds, which he achieved during the Asian Championships in April.
India’s compound archery teams delivered another memorable performance at the Games. The men’s compound archery team defeated South Korea 236-229 in the semifinal and entered the final, where they will face China. The team featuring Sahil Jadhav, Kushal Dalal and Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru is aiming to secure India’s third consecutive compound archery medal at the Asian Games. Earlier the women’s compound archery team won the gold medal after defeating China 238-234. Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi and Prithika Pradeep helped India achieve the historic victory.
For Jyothi, the triumph marked her fourth Asian Games gold medal, while Chikitha and Prithika claimed their maiden Asian Games titles. Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav later added another gold medal for India by winning the compound mixed team event after defeating South Korea in a shoot-off. The victory also secured India a qualification quota for the compound mixed team event at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
In boxing Commonwealth Games 2026 gold medalist Priya Ghanghas finished with a bronze medal after losing her women’s 60kg semifinal bout against China’s Yang Chengyu. Despite missing out on a place in the final, Priya’s performance added another medal to India’s growing tally.
India achieved another milestone in shooting as Neeru Dhanda and Kynan Chenai won gold in the mixed trap team event. The Indian pair set a new Asian Games record with a score of 34, breaking Qatar’s previous record of 30. Qatar finished with silver after scoring 32, while China secured bronze with 23 points.
The gold medal marked India’s first-ever Asian Games gold in the trap mixed team event.

India’s impressive performances across multiple disciplines have taken the country’s medal tally to 56 medals at the Asian Games 2026. The tally includes nine gold medals, 21 silver medals and 26 bronze medals. Indian shooters have contributed significantly, winning 15 medals so far, including three gold, eight silver and four bronze medals.
With several events still remaining, India’s athletes continue their push for more podium finishes in Aichi-Nagoya.
