At the forefront of this situation is Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan. He had created a significant opportunity for himself and his nation when FIFA picked him as an official referee at the World Cup 2026. It would make him the first Somali referee to officiate at a FIFA World Cup.
Unfortunately, he was denied entry to the United States despite having a valid visa. FIFA then confirmed his inability to officiate in the World Cup. This situation has attracted quite a lot of interest in the football world. In Somalia, Artan's selection by FIFA had meant much to their nation.
For most referees, participating in FIFA games does not often make headlines. For Artan the situation is a bit different. Somalia celebrated the decision of FIFA to select Artan in the World Cup. He became the pride of the football fraternity in Somalia and made headlines in his nation.
He would miss out on refereeing at the World Cup now raises questions about challenges facing international participants. Although the U.S. government has not explained why they turned down Artan's entry, FIFA confirmed the decision.
Iran is yet another nation that has experienced some setbacks in preparation for the upcoming World Cup. It is reported that some members of their delegation had issues getting visas which affected their plans.
Although it has not prevented them from playing at the World Cup, some members of the Iranian delegation could not join in the preparations. All of this is happening amid continued tension between the two countries.
The FIFA President Gianni Infantino has described the situation as unfortunate but added that issues regarding migration are the duty of governments. The truth is that international sporting events attract players, officials and fans from all over the world.
