Why are CSK above RR in IPL 2026 points table despite having same points and net run rate?

New Delhi: The race for the IPL 2026 playoffs has entered a thrilling phase, with several teams still battling for a spot in the top four. Amid the intense competition, many fans were left confused after noticing that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are placed above Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the points table despite both teams having identical records.

Both CSK and RR have played 12 matches so far this season, winning six and losing six. The two teams also have the same number of points and, at first glance, appear to share an identical net run rate (NRR). However, Chennai currently occupy fifth place while Rajasthan remain sixth.

The Real Difference Lies Beyond Three Decimal Places

The confusion arises because IPL points tables usually display net run rate figures only up to three decimal places. While both teams appear level on the visible chart, CSK actually hold a marginally superior NRR when calculated in full detail.

Rajasthan Royals currently have a net run rate of 0.02670848420776258, while Chennai Super Kings possess a slightly better figure of 0.0270247695415129.

That tiny mathematical advantage places CSK ahead of RR in the standings.

Playoff Race Intensifies

The IPL 2026 playoff battle remains wide open. At present, Royal Challengers Bengaluru lead the table, followed by Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Punjab Kings currently occupy the fourth and final playoff position.

Just outside the top four are Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, making every remaining game crucial.

Rajasthan Royals Face Must-Win Situation

Rajasthan Royals are scheduled to face Lucknow Super Giants next at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

After suffering three consecutive defeats, RR will likely need victories in their remaining matches to strengthen their playoff hopes. The margins are now so fine that even the smallest swing in net run rate could significantly impact the final standings.
