New Delhi: India’s squad for the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan and the Asian Games 2026 has received a major update after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named Yash Thakur as Harshit Rana’s replacement. Rana has been ruled out after suffering a rectus femoris strain during a match simulation session on September 7, 2026. The injury setback comes as another blow for the young pacer, who has already faced multiple fitness issues this year.
At the same time, Team India received a major boost as star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah successfully cleared his fitness assessment and has been declared available for the Afghanistan T20I series.
Yash Thakur has earned an opportunity to represent India after Rana’s latest injury setback. The Vidarbha pacer made his T20I debut during India’s tour of Zimbabwe in July, where he impressed with his performances. In two matches, Thakur picked up four wickets and showcased his ability in the shortest format.
The 27-year-old fast bowler also brings significant domestic and IPL experience. He has played 50 matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, taking 81 wickets with an economy rate of 7.04. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Thakur has featured in 22 matches and claimed 27 wickets.
Rana’s latest injury adds to a difficult year for the young fast bowler. He had earlier suffered a knee injury before the T20 World Cup and was forced to miss the tournament. After undergoing surgery before the IPL season, Rana remained away from action for a significant period. He eventually returned during India’s England tour, but suffered another setback during the T20I series.
India received positive news ahead of the Afghanistan series as Jasprit Bumrah has been declared fit after recovering from a knee injury. The return of the experienced pacer is expected to strengthen India’s fast bowling department, which has faced challenges due to recent injuries. Bumrah’s availability will provide a major boost to India’s plans in both the Afghanistan T20I series and the Asian Games campaign.
Afghanistan will host India for a three-match T20I series, with all games scheduled to be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The matches will take place on September 13, 15 and 17, 2026. Meanwhile, the Asian Games 2026 cricket event will begin on September 28, 2026, with India entering the tournament as defending champions.
