Mumbai/ 30 June 2016. At least nine people, including five children, were killed in a fire that broke out at Wafa Medical Store in Andheri West on Thursday.
According to preliminary reports fire started due to a short circuit.
The medical store was on the ground floor of the building whereas on the first and second floors some families were staying.
The fire rapidly spread to the other floors and engulfed the whole building.
Families trapped in fire
The family that owned the medical store was staying at the first floor.
The family members were sleeping at the time when fire broke out and got trapped inside the building.
Official statement
Spokesperson of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Disaster control said that victims had died due to suffocation from the toxic fumes.
Two members had sustained severe burns.
According to fire personnel a cylinder kept in the medical store might have exploded resulting in the fire. The exact cause of the fire could not be ascertained immediately.
