World celebrates Buddha Purnima with fervour

New Delhi / 20 May 2016. The world is celebrating Buddha Purnima on Saturday.  Also known as Buddha Jayanti, it commemorates his enlightenment and nirvana. 

In India Buddha Jayanti  is celebrated at the various Buddhist sites , particularly at Bodhgaya in Bihar and Sarnath near Varanasi. 

Buddha enlightenment
Buddha was born in Lumbini, which is now part of Nepal. Named Siddhartha Gautama, he was born into a royal family in the 5th or 6th century BC. However, at the age of 29 he left his family and palace in search of enlightenment. He got enlightened at Bodhgaya.
