New Delhi: Ash Wednesday is celebrated in Christians. It is a holy day of prayer and fasting. It is also observed as a first day of Lent day. Most of Christians begin Ash Wednesday by marking a Lenten calendar doing fasting prayer for next six weeks. 

What is Ash Wednesday means?
Ash Wednesday derives its name from the placing of repentance ashes on the foreheads. This significant "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

Why Christian use of ash?
It is a sign of repentance. Ashes were used in ancient times to express grief. The gesture was also used to express sorrow for sins and faults. 

Why it is celebrated?
Ash Wednesday marks the start of a 40-day period which is an allusion to the separation of Jesus in the desert to fast and pray. During this time he was tempted.
