Bengaluru: Amid the Nandini vs Amul row, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi bought a Nandini ice cream, relished it and called it the "pride of Karnataka".

He said that Nandini, the flagship brand of the Karnataka Milk Federation, is the 'best'.

The Congress leader's move comes in the wake of party leaders in the state strongly backing the Karnataka dairy brand amid fears of a takeover by Gujarat's Amul.

Rahul, who is on a two-day visit to the state, bought ice cream from a Nandini milk store. He was accompanied by state party chief DK Shivakumar and party general secretary KC Venugopal among several others.

According to a Dynamite News correspondent, Rahul Gandhi later shared his picture on Twitter, writing, "Pride of Karnataka, Nandini is the best."

The dispute between the two milk unions started recently after Amul announced that it would supply milk in Bengaluru as well.

Opposition Congress and JD(S) have claimed that the BJP wants to 'finish' Nandini by allowing Amul in Karnataka. They have also expressed apprehension that a shortage of Nandini's products will be created to pave the way for Amul's takeover.

However, the BJP government in the state, led by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, refuted the allegations saying that there was no threat to Nandini from Amul.
