New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed Union Government to file its response within 4 weeks over the Places of Worship Act.

A bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna and Justices PV Sanjay Kumar and KV Viswanathan sought the government's response while hearing a batch of petitions challenging the validity of the Places of Worship (Special Provision) Act of 1991.

'No Fresh Suits on Religious Places'
The Apex Court also barred all courts from acting on suits challenging the ownership and title of places of worship till the next date of hearing.

"We deem it fit to direct that no fresh suits shall be registered or proceedings be ordered. In the pending suits, no effective interim orders or final orders including orders of survey can be granted by civil courts till the next date of hearing," the Bench said.
