Karur: In the aftermath of the tragic stampede at a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally in Karur last month, party chief and popular actor Vijay has initiated a series of video calls to console the families of victims.

In his conversations, Vijay expressed deep sorrow and assured the bereaved families of his support, addressing one grieving mother, “I am like your son.” The initiative comes as part of his effort to provide comfort and reassurance to those affected by the incident.

Stampede claimed lives of 41 people

The stampede, which occurred on September 27, claimed the lives of 41 people and injured over 60 others. Authorities reported that the disaster unfolded when the crowd surged uncontrollably as Vijay arrived at the rally in Veluswamypuram.

The event had reportedly drawn nearly 30,000 people, far exceeding the venue’s capacity. Investigations suggest that overcrowding, inadequate crowd control, lack of essential facilities like food and water, and power failures contributed significantly to the tragedy. The incident has been described as one of the deadliest accidents at a political rally in recent Tamil Nadu history.

Vijay faced criticism for delayed arrival

In the immediate aftermath, Vijay faced public criticism for his delayed arrival and for leaving the venue shortly after the stampede. The Madras High Court also expressed concern over the handling of the situation and ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by senior police officer Asra Garg.

Several party officials, including district secretary Mathiyazhagan and general secretaries Bussy Anand and Nirmal Sekar, have been named in the FIRs, and investigations are ongoing.

Vijay’s recent outreach, conducted through WhatsApp video calls, reportedly lasted between five to twenty minutes per family. During these conversations, he expressed deep regret over the incident, assured families of financial support, and reiterated the party’s commitment to providing relief.

TVK announces Rs 20 lakh for each deceased

TVK had earlier announced compensation of Rs 20 lakh for each deceased victim and Rs 2 lakh for those injured.

While many families welcomed Vijay’s personal outreach, critics argue that verbal condolences alone cannot replace accountability or systemic improvements. Observers suggest that enhanced crowd management measures and stricter safety protocols are essential to prevent future tragedies at large public gatherings.

The actor-politician has also promised to visit Karur in person to meet the families and offer further support. As Tamil Nadu continues to mourn the victims of the Karur stampede, the focus remains on justice, improved public safety measures, and the emotional healing of those affected.
