New Delhi: Google has introduced a native version of its AI assistant Gemini for Mac, enabling users to access advanced artificial intelligence tools directly from their desktops without relying on a browser.

The app is now available globally for devices running macOS 15 and above, marking a significant expansion of Google’s AI ecosystem to Apple’s desktop platform.

Direct Access to AI on Mac

Until now, Mac users could only access Gemini through a web interface. With the launch of the dedicated app, users can now interact with the AI assistant more seamlessly, including using a keyboard shortcut: Option + Space to activate it without switching tabs.

The move aims to improve productivity by integrating AI tools directly into the desktop workflow.

Wide Range of Features

The Gemini app allows users to share files and screens with the AI assistant to receive summaries, insights and detailed reports. It can also assist in writing tasks, research and real-time information retrieval.

In addition, the app supports creative functions such as generating images, editing visuals, composing music and even creating videos using AI tools.

AI Models Powering Creativity

The platform integrates Google’s advanced AI models, including Nano Banana for image generation and editing, and Veo for video creation. Veo is capable of producing high-quality videos, including up to 4K resolution, based on text or visual prompts.

These capabilities position Gemini as a multi-purpose AI tool for both professional and creative use.

Global Rollout and Future Plans

Google confirmed that the app is available at no additional cost for Mac users worldwide. The company also indicated that more features and improvements will be added in the coming months to enhance user experience.

Competition in Desktop AI Space

With this launch, Google joins other major players that have already introduced native AI apps for macOS. OpenAI released its desktop app in 2024, followed by Anthropic with its Claude desktop version later that year.

The release of Gemini’s Mac app reflects growing competition among tech companies to bring AI tools closer to everyday computing environments.

The launch underscores a broader trend of integrating AI directly into operating systems, offering users faster and more efficient ways to manage tasks, create content and access information.
