New Delhi: Instagram has given its iconic name a fresh appearance after more than a decade, but the platform has chosen to preserve the identity users have known for years.

The social media giant has refreshed its wordmark, introducing redesigned letterforms while keeping the familiar script-style branding intact.

Instagram’s First Wordmark Update in a Decade

The update was announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri on Instagram and Threads on August 13.

Calling the redesign “cleaner, sharper and more modern,” Mosseri said the change was aimed at refreshing the brand while staying connected to its original design language.

“The wordmark at the top of the app hasn’t changed in 10 years, so it was time for a refresh,” Mosseri said.

What Has Changed in Instagram’s New Design?

Unlike a complete rebranding, Instagram has introduced a subtle transformation to its visual identity. The refreshed wordmark comes with redesigned letter shapes, cleaner typography and a sharper appearance while keeping the same recognisable script style that users have associated with the platform for years. Instead of creating an entirely new identity, the company has focused on refining its existing design to give it a more modern and polished look.

Last Major Instagram Design Change Came in 2016

Instagram’s previous major visual overhaul happened in 2016 when the platform replaced its classic brown camera icon with a colourful pink-gradient design.

That colourful gradient icon continues to represent Instagram globally.

The latest update focuses only on the wordmark, making it a much smaller but significant branding change.

Why Did Instagram Refresh Its Wordmark?

Instagram wants to modernise its appearance while keeping the emotional connection users have built with the platform over the years.

The redesign reflects a broader trend among global technology brands — evolving their visual identity without making dramatic changes that confuse users.

Internet Reacts to Instagram’s New Look

While Instagram described the change as cleaner and more modern, reactions online have been mixed.

Some users welcomed the refreshed design, while others questioned whether the subtle change was necessary after a decade.

The new wordmark may look different, but Instagram’s goal remains the same — keeping its familiar identity while giving it a modern touch.
