New Delhi: UPI payments have become a key part of India’s digital economy, allowing users to make instant transactions through apps like Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay and BHIM. However, many users occasionally face a frustrating situation where the payment fails but the amount still gets deducted from their bank account.

Experts say such cases are usually temporary and most refunds are processed automatically within a few hours or days.

Why Do UPI Transactions Fail?

UPI payments can fail because of server overload, weak internet connection, technical glitches, bank maintenance or delays in the NPCI network during peak hours. Sometimes, apps may display a failed status even though the transaction is still being processed.

Avoid Making A Second Payment Immediately

Users are advised not to make another payment instantly after a failed transaction alert. In some cases, the original payment may still get processed after a short delay, resulting in double payment.

Checking SMS alerts, bank notifications and transaction history before retrying is considered the safest approach.

How Long Does Refund Take?

Normally, failed UPI payments are automatically reversed within a few minutes or hours. However, banks may take up to 72 hours to process the refund in some cases.

The amount is directly credited back to the linked bank account instead of the UPI app wallet.

What To Do If Refund Is Delayed?

Contact The UPI App

Users should first raise a complaint through the support section of the app used for payment, including Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay or BHIM. Transaction ID, screenshots and payment details may be required.

Reach Out To The Bank

If the issue is not resolved, users can contact their linked bank’s customer care service or visit the branch for assistance.

Escalate To NPCI

In unresolved cases, users can escalate the complaint to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates the UPI network across the country.

Tips To Avoid UPI Issues

Experts recommend using a stable internet connection, keeping transaction screenshots, updating apps regularly and avoiding repeated payment attempts during network delays.

As UPI transactions continue to rise rapidly across India, awareness about refund procedures and transaction safety has become increasingly important for digital payment users.
