New Delhi: WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a new username feature that will allow users to connect with others without sharing their phone numbers. The update, currently under testing for select Android and iPhone users, is expected to be rolled out more widely in 2026.
The feature marks a major privacy-focused shift for the messaging platform and brings WhatsApp closer to apps such as Telegram, Signal and Instagram, where usernames are already commonly used.

Under the new system, users will be able to create a unique username linked to their WhatsApp account. People searching or contacting them through the username will only see the chosen handle instead of their mobile number.
However, phone numbers will continue to remain connected to accounts for login, verification and security-related purposes. WhatsApp users will also have the option to continue using the app in the traditional way without creating a username.
Once the feature becomes available, users can set up their usernames through the app settings section. After selecting a username, WhatsApp will verify whether it is available before confirming it.
The company has introduced several rules for username creation to reduce spam and impersonation. Usernames must contain between three and 35 characters and include at least one letter. Only letters, numbers, underscores and periods will be allowed.
Certain formats, including usernames beginning with “www” or ending in website extensions such as “.com” or “.org”, will not be permitted.
The new feature is being viewed as a significant privacy improvement, especially for users who interact with unknown people online for work, business or community activities.

By allowing communication through usernames instead of phone numbers, WhatsApp aims to reduce unwanted calls, spam and privacy risks linked to sharing personal contact information.
The platform has already introduced several privacy-focused tools in recent years, including disappearing messages, chat lock features, screenshot blocking and secret codes.
Although the feature is still under development and limited testing, industry observers believe it could become one of WhatsApp’s most important updates in 2026.
The rollout timeline has not yet been officially confirmed, but broader availability is expected after the testing phase is completed.
