New Delhi: WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature aimed at strengthening user privacy. The upcoming option, called “After Reading,” will allow messages to automatically disappear as soon as they are viewed by the recipient.

The feature is currently under testing and is expected to offer users greater control over their conversations.

How the ‘After Reading’ Feature Works

According to reports, the feature will enable users to send messages that self-destruct immediately after being opened. Unlike existing options, users will not need to set any timer for deletion.

To use it, users can simply select the “After Reading” mode before sending a message. Once the recipient opens the chat, the message will vanish instantly, leaving no trace in the conversation.

Difference From Disappearing Messages

WhatsApp already offers a Disappearing Messages feature, where chats are automatically deleted after a set duration such as 24 hours or seven days.

However, the new “After Reading” feature takes privacy a step further by removing messages immediately after they are seen, rather than after a fixed time period. This makes it more suitable for sharing sensitive or confidential information.

Currently in Beta Testing Phase

The feature has been spotted in the Android beta version of the app, indicating that it is being tested with a limited group of users. A wider rollout will depend on the success of this testing phase.

If approved, the feature is expected to be introduced for both Android and iOS users in future updates.

Focus on Privacy and Secure Communication

With growing concerns around digital privacy and data security, WhatsApp continues to roll out features that give users more control over their messages.

The “After Reading” option could help users share sensitive details more safely, reduce the risk of misuse, and keep conversations temporary and secure.
