Lucknow: The assembly membership of Abbas Ansari, son of MLA and former MP Mukhtar Ansari from Mau district of Uttar Pradesh, has been restored. On Monday, the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly Secretariat issued an official order in this regard. Abbas Ansari's membership was canceled after he was convicted in the hate speech case.

It is known that Abbas Ansari was sentenced to three years by the MP-MLA Special Court for making inflammatory statements during a speech. The case was registered in the year 2022, in which Ansari was accused of inciting communal sentiments and violating the code of conduct during the elections. After being convicted, his membership was terminated on 31 May 2025 and the Mau assembly seat was declared vacant.

However, Abbas Ansari challenged this decision in the Allahabad High Court. Hearing his review petition, the High Court quashed the order of the lower court. The court said that Ansari cannot be considered disqualified until the final decision is taken. With this, the court stayed the sentence and paved the way for restoration of assembly membership.

After this decision of Allahabad High Court, the Assembly Secretariat issued an order on 8 September 2025 and restored the membership of Abbas Ansari. It has been clarified in the order that Abbas Ansari will again be considered a legitimate member of Mau assembly constituency.

Abbas Ansari is carrying forward the political legacy of his father Mukhtar Ansari. His image has been that of a flamboyant and controversial leader. Many criminal cases are also registered against him, but he has a strong support base in his area. After the restoration of assembly membership, his political future seems to be getting stronger once again.
