Deoria: A horrifying incident rocked Deoria district on Thursday afternoon when four people were attacked with acid at Mayil crossing under the jurisdiction of Mayil Police Station.
The sudden assault triggered chaos and panic in the busy market area, leaving onlookers stunned. Among the victims, one man sustained critical injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Gorakhpur’s BRD Medical College.
Dispute Over Pledged Jewellery Turns Violent
According to Dynamite News correspondent, the attack stemmed from a dispute between a jeweller and his customers over pledged jewellery. The altercation reportedly began when the customers visited the jeweller’s shop to retrieve their mortgaged ornaments. Tempers flared, and in a shocking turn of events, the shopkeeper lost control and threw acid on the customers.

The victims were identified as Chandan Rajbhar, his sister Sandhya Rajbhar, and two other bystanders- Sudhanshu Shukla and Raghav Rajbhar who happened to be near the scene when the incident occurred.
Victims Rushed to Hospital
Eyewitnesses reported that the acid attack caused immediate chaos in the marketplace, with people running for safety and trying to help the screaming victims. Local residents and shopkeepers quickly rushed the injured to the Community Health Center (CHC) Bhagalpur.
Given the seriousness of their injuries, three of the victims were later referred to the Maharshi Devrah Baba Medical College, Deoria, for advanced medical treatment. Chandan Rajbhar, who suffered severe burns, was transferred to BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur, where his condition remains critical.
Doctors at the medical college confirmed that the victims sustained burns on their faces, hands, and torsos, with one of them in a highly serious state. Immediate efforts are being made to stabilize all four.
Accused Jeweller Absconding; Police Launch Hunt
The accused jeweller, identified as Arvind Verma, who owns a jewellery shop at Mayil crossing, fled the scene soon after the attack. Police teams have launched a manhunt to nab him.
Speaking to the media, local police officials said, “We have received a complaint about the acid attack incident at Mayil crossing. The accused has been identified and teams are conducting raids to arrest him. A detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the dispute and how the acid was procured.”

The brutal nature of the attack has left residents of Deoria shocked and fearful. Locals gathered outside the police station demanding strict action against the accused and better regulation of hazardous substances like acid.
Several traders in the area expressed outrage, calling for stringent measures to ensure that such dangerous materials are not easily accessible. “No disagreement or argument can justify such a heinous act. The attacker must be punished severely,” said a local shopkeeper.

District officials have assured that the victims are receiving the best possible medical care and that the culprit will be brought to justice soon. Police are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and recording statements of eyewitnesses to build a solid case.
