Equality Day: Akhilesh, Dimple & Iqra’s Big Women-Centric Message in Lucknow
Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party has placed women voters at the centre of its latest political push. On Women’s Equality Day, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, MP Dimple Yadav and Kairana MP Iqra Choudhary highlighted women’s safety, dignity, financial independence and education while announcing a renewed focus on women-centric welfare initiatives.
The announcements have drawn attention as women voters continue to play a crucial role in Uttar Pradesh politics, with parties increasingly competing to address issues such as security, economic support, education and social equality.
For millions of women across Uttar Pradesh, concerns related to safety, financial independence and access to opportunities remain key issues. Political parties are now increasingly viewing women not just as beneficiaries of schemes but as a decisive electoral force.
Addressing a press conference at the Samajwadi Party headquarters in Lucknow on Wednesday, Akhilesh Yadav said the party would continue working towards strengthening women’s rights and welfare.
He assured women that the proposed ‘Stree Samman Samriddhi Yojana’, mentioned in the party’s manifesto, would be taken forward. The scheme has emerged as one of the major women-focused promises highlighted by the party.
He assured that women’s dignity and security would remain among the top priorities of an SP government and asserted that no compromise would be made on the protection of women and daughters. He also emphasised the importance of education, saying the party would work towards improving the education system and creating better learning opportunities for children.
SP MP Iqra Choudhary, commonly known as Iqra Hasan, highlighted the importance of women’s economic empowerment and social dignity during the interaction. She said respect for women is a fundamental right and stressed that empowering women financially and socially is essential for achieving true equality.
The proposed Stree Samman Samriddhi Yojana includes an initial assistance amount of ₹40,000, according to the party’s announcement. The scheme has become a key part of the SP’s women-centric political messaging as parties focus on welfare initiatives aimed at connecting directly with women voters.
SP MP Dimple Yadav raised concerns related to women’s safety, equality and institutional support systems. She highlighted that women need not only legal protection but also access to healthcare assistance and support mechanisms. Referring to Asha Jyoti Kendras established during the previous SP government, she said such centres were created to provide women with legal and health-related assistance.
Dimple alleged that these support systems were weakened and called for stronger arrangements to protect women. She also reacted to the CJP protest controversy involving climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, saying that peaceful expression of views should be respected in a democracy.
During the Lucknow press conference, SP leaders launched a political attack on the BJP over women’s safety, equality and representation. Akhilesh Yadav said women’s concerns should not remain limited to political slogans and argued that effective implementation of policies is necessary for real empowerment.
Dimple Yadav also said that people were seeking change and asserted that the Samajwadi Party would continue raising public issues. The statements have intensified the political debate in Uttar Pradesh, where parties are competing to build a stronger connection with women voters through welfare promises and empowerment initiatives.
Along with women empowerment, education emerged as another major theme during the Women’s Equality Day programme. Akhilesh Yadav said the Samajwadi Party would work towards strengthening schools and improving educational opportunities for children.
He reiterated his claim that thousands of primary schools closed during the BJP government’s tenure would be reopened if the SP comes to power. The education push reflects the party’s attempt to connect welfare politics with long-term development, employment opportunities and the future of young people.
