Lucknow: A fresh political buzz has emerged in Uttar Pradesh after senior Congress leaders reportedly returned without meeting Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati at her residence in Lucknow.
Congress leaders Tanuj Punia and Rajendra Pal Gautam had visited the BSP leader’s residence recently, but Mayawati did not meet them. The two leaders reportedly left after waiting at the entrance, triggering political speculation ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
According to political discussions surrounding the visit, the Congress leaders were believed to be carrying a message from Rahul Gandhi. However, neither the Congress party nor Rahul Gandhi officially confirmed such claims.
Later, Congress leaders in Uttar Pradesh clarified that the visit was merely a courtesy call and not part of any formal political outreach or alliance-building exercise.
The incident has intensified discussions around possible opposition coordination in Uttar Pradesh before the 2027 Assembly polls. Political observers believe Congress is trying to rebuild its presence in the state and may be exploring better relations with regional parties.
At the same time, the Bahujan Samaj Party has repeatedly maintained that it intends to contest elections independently rather than as part of a coalition.
In recent months, Mayawati has focused on strengthening the BSP organisation and consolidating its traditional Dalit support base. Party leaders have consistently indicated that the BSP wants to preserve its separate political identity in Uttar Pradesh politics.
The development also reflects the broader challenges faced by opposition parties in building a united front in the state, where electoral equations remain highly competitive.
While no official alliance discussions have been announced, the failed meeting has added a new layer of political intrigue. With the 2027 elections still some time away, every interaction between opposition leaders is likely to remain under close public and political scrutiny.
