Lucknow: A 21-year-old commerce student in Lucknow has been arrested for allegedly killing his father and attempting to conceal the crime by dismembering the body and hiding parts of it in a blue plastic drum, police said.

The accused, identified as Akshat Singh, was taken into custody after investigators uncovered inconsistencies in his statements during questioning. Authorities said he later confessed to the killing. The victim, Manvendra Singh, was reported missing for several days before the case took a dramatic turn during the investigation.

Crime Allegedly Followed Family Dispute

According to police officials, the incident occurred in the early hours of February 20 at the family’s residence in the Ashiana area of Lucknow.

Investigators suspect that a dispute between the father and son preceded the crime. Earlier reports suggested that the disagreement may have been related to career choices, with the father allegedly encouraging his son to prepare for the medical entrance examination.

However, neighbours and acquaintances of the family have questioned this explanation, stating that such a brutal act could not have been triggered solely by disagreements over academic plans.

Chilling Attempt To Destroy Evidence

Police said the accused allegedly tried to dispose of the body to erase evidence. After the killing, he reportedly dragged the body from the third floor of the house to an empty room on the ground floor.

Investigators said the accused then dismembered the body using tools available in the house. Some of the remains were placed inside a blue plastic drum, while other parts were allegedly transported by car and dumped in a remote area near Sadrauna. The torso and head were reportedly hidden in the drum, which the accused was planning to dispose of later.

Police revealed that the accused’s younger sister, a Class 11 student, allegedly witnessed the crime. Investigators said she was threatened and warned not to reveal what had happened. Authorities are currently providing support to the minor while continuing their investigation into the case.

Police Investigation Continues

Officers from the local police station intervened before the accused could dispose of the remaining evidence. Some body parts are yet to be recovered, and search operations are ongoing.

Police said the accused’s confession and the evidence gathered so far are being examined as part of the investigation. The case has shocked residents in the area and sparked discussions about rising violent crimes within families.
