Sonbhadra: There was a stir among the residents of Palpal village under the Rampur Barkonia police station area when news of the husband and wife's deaths reached the village. People rushed to the nearby forest and found the wife's body lying on the ground while the husband's body was hanging from a Mahua tree.
The incident came to light when the deceased woman’s brother went searching for the couple after they had been missing for a long time. During the search, he discovered their bodies and immediately informed the local police, reports Dynamite News.
The brother stated that the couple had gone to the forest together between 10 and 11 a.m. to collect chironji. During this time, an argument broke out between them for unknown reasons. In a fit of rage, the husband, Rajendra, slit his wife Rita’s throat with an axe. He then hanged himself using her sari.
Regarding the incident, Additional SP Kalu Singh said that on Wednesday afternoon, Vijay Gujar, a resident of Palpal, filed a report at the Rampur Barkonia police station. He stated that his elder brother, Rajendra Gujar (38), son of Prabhu Narayan Gujar, had murdered his wife Rita (35) with an axe in the forest before committing suicide.
The couple had gone to the forest in the morning to collect chironji when a dispute arose between them. Rajendra killed his wife with the axe, resulting in her immediate death, and then hanged himself from a nearby Mahua tree using her sari.
Upon receiving the information, the police station in-charge, area officer, and Additional Superintendent of Police arrived at the scene. The bodies were taken into custody, Panchama proceedings were conducted, and the bodies were sent for post-mortem. Necessary legal action is being taken in the case.
Local authorities have assured a thorough investigation into the matter, though initial evidence suggests no third-party involvement. Neighbours and relatives are being questioned to determine whether there were underlying marital tensions or external pressures that may have triggered this extreme step.
Meanwhile, the village mourns the loss of two lives in what appears to be a tragic case of domestic violence spiraling into irreversible tragedy.
Psychological experts emphasize the importance of addressing marital conflicts and mental health struggles before they escalate to such extremes. As the police continue their probe, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of unchecked anger and despair.
