Atiq Ahmed’s son Aban Ahmed died during a road accident in Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi district.
Jhansi: A tragic road accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi has brought a major setback for the family of former mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed. Two people, including Atiq Ahmed’s son Aban Ahmed, died after a speeding car lost control and collided with a roadside divider on Thursday. Three other youths travelling in the vehicle sustained serious injuries and are undergoing treatment.
According to preliminary information, the group was travelling from Prayagraj to Jhansi to meet Ali Ahmed, another son of Atiq Ahmed, who is currently lodged in Jhansi jail. The accident took place under the jurisdiction of Poonch police station area near Khilli village on the highway. Police sources said that five people from Prayagraj’s Phaphamau area were travelling towards Jhansi in the car. The deceased and injured have been identified as Ahzam, aged around 28, Mohammad Zaid, aged around 30, Umar, aged around 24, Aban Ahmed and Sonu Khan.
When the vehicle reached near Khilli village on the highway, the driver reportedly lost control due to high speed. The car then rammed into a roadside divider with heavy impact. The collision was so severe that the front portion of the vehicle was completely damaged. The intensity of the crash caused fatal injuries to Aban Ahmed and Sonu Khan, who died on the spot.
After receiving information about the accident, local residents and police teams reached the spot and started rescue operations. The injured youths, Ahzam, Mohammad Zaid and Umar, were initially provided medical assistance and later referred to Jhansi Medical College for advanced treatment. Doctors are monitoring their condition, and further details regarding their health status are awaited.
The Poonch police reached the accident site and carried out the initial investigation. The damaged vehicle was removed from the highway, following which traffic movement was restored. The bodies of Aban Ahmed and Sonu Khan were taken into police custody and sent for postmortem examination as part of the legal procedure.
Police officials said the preliminary investigation indicates that excessive speed may have been a major reason behind the accident. However, authorities are also examining other possible factors, including vehicle condition, road circumstances and driver-related issues.
Investigators have found that the group was travelling from Prayagraj to meet Ali Ahmed, who is currently lodged in Jhansi jail.
Ali Ahmed was shifted from Prayagraj’s Naini Jail to Jhansi Jail on October 1, 2025, and has remained imprisoned there since then. The youths were reportedly travelling specifically for a meeting with him when the accident occurred. The police are collecting details about the journey, route, vehicle movement and circumstances leading to the crash.
Atiq Ahmed, a former Samajwadi Party MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Phulpur constituency, had faced several criminal cases during his lifetime. He was killed along with his brother Ashraf in April 2023 while being taken for medical examination in Prayagraj under police custody.
After Atiq Ahmed’s death, investigations into cases linked to his alleged criminal network continued, with several members of his family and associates facing legal proceedings. The Jhansi road accident has once again brought the Atiq Ahmed family into public attention, though police officials have clarified that the current matter is being investigated as a road accident case. Further action will depend on the findings of the investigation and postmortem reports.
