Lucknow: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has made another significant change in her approach towards family members within the party organisation, triggering fresh discussions about BSP’s leadership structure ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Election 2027.
Within just six days, Mayawati has altered her earlier position on the political role of her family members. While Deepika Anand was earlier kept as a possible option for organisational assistance, the BSP chief has now decided not to assign her any party responsibility.
At the same time, Ishan Anand, son of Mayawati’s brother Anand Kumar, has been given another opportunity to remain involved in the party organisation. The latest move has once again brought the issue of succession, internal restructuring and the future direction of BSP into the political spotlight.
The latest development is significant because Mayawati had announced a different approach on September 12.
At that time, the BSP chief had stated that neither of her brother Anand Kumar’s sons, Akash Anand and Ishan Anand, would receive political positions in the party. However, she had kept the possibility open for Deepika Anand, Anand Kumar’s daughter, saying she could assist in organisational work if required.
The latest decision indicates a change in that strategy, with Mayawati maintaining distance from assigning formal organisational responsibilities to Deepika Anand.
Mayawati has now indicated that Ishan Anand will be given a respectable responsibility within the BSP structure. Earlier, she had stated that Ishan would not receive a political post, but the latest development has opened a fresh opportunity for his involvement in party activities.
However, Mayawati has also maintained strict conditions regarding discipline and loyalty. She has indicated that any family member associated with the organisation would have to follow party principles, and serious anti-party activities could lead to action.
The decision has renewed discussions over whether BSP is preparing a new generation of leaders while maintaining control over organisational discipline.
The BSP chief also clarified her position regarding Akash Anand, who was removed from important party responsibilities earlier this month. Mayawati had announced that Akash Anand would no longer remain connected with key party activities. She also raised objections regarding the political influence of Akash Anand’s father-in-law and former Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Siddharth.
The developments around Akash Anand, Ishan Anand and Deepika Anand have become one of the major political talking points within BSP circles.
While explaining her decisions, Mayawati referred to BSP founder Kanshi Ram’s political philosophy and his approach towards family involvement in politics.
She highlighted that Kanshi Ram had dedicated his life to the Bahujan movement and avoided promoting relatives for political benefits. Mayawati also explained that her brother Anand Kumar has been associated with her political journey for several years. She said certain circumstances and security-related concerns required her brother’s continued presence around her.
The latest organisational changes have intensified the debate over BSP’s future leadership structure ahead of the crucial Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Since the beginning of September, decisions involving Akash Anand, Ishan Anand and Deepika Anand have kept BSP’s internal dynamics in focus.
Political observers are watching whether Mayawati’s latest move represents a broader organisational restructuring strategy aimed at strengthening the party before the upcoming electoral battle. The BSP chief has also spoken about increasing the participation of younger leaders, including Gen-Z members, in the organisation.
She has indicated that young candidates may receive greater opportunities in upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab. The latest move has once again placed the spotlight on BSP’s future roadmap and Mayawati’s strategy to rebuild the party organisation.
