New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh government has approved a proposal to rename the Jewar-based Noida International Airport as Narendra Modi International Airport. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the decision after a state cabinet meeting on Friday, October 9.

The move gives the airport a new proposed name as the state continues to expand its aviation infrastructure. Located in Jewar in Gautam Buddha Nagar district, the airport is a major infrastructure project intended to serve the National Capital Region (NCR) alongside Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Why Is the Jewar Airport Important?

Noida International Airport has been developed to ease pressure on Delhi’s existing airport and improve connectivity for western Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring regions.

The airport is expected to benefit travellers from Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Agra, Mathura and other parts of the NCR and western Uttar Pradesh.

Its development is also linked to the region’s broader infrastructure expansion, including road networks and multimodal transport connections.

What Is the Airport’s Capacity?

The airport’s first phase features a runway and passenger terminal designed to handle up to 12 million passengers annually. Plans for future expansion aim to increase its capacity significantly as air travel demand grows.

The project has been developed under a public-private partnership involving Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, along with government authorities.

What Happens Next?

The cabinet’s approval marks a key step in the proposed renaming process. The formal implementation of the new name will depend on the applicable administrative and official procedures.

The development places the airport’s naming decision in the spotlight as Uttar Pradesh continues to position the facility as a major aviation and economic hub for the region.
