Samajwadi Party Supremo Akhilesh Yadav slams BJP over Dal Mandi widening; Says Govt ‘Snatching Livelihoods’

The SP chief challenged the BJP to list any significant development work it has completed. He said the government should focus on cleaning the Varuna River and constructing a flyover, adding that the metros in Lucknow, Kanpur, Noida, and Delhi were contributions of the Samajwadi Party. “Had our government returned, the Varanasi Metro would have been running today, and no poor trader’s shop would have been demolished,” he said.

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party President and Kannauj MP Akhilesh Yadav on Friday launched a scathing attack on the BJP government during a press conference in Lucknow, alleging that the Dal Mandi road-widening project in Varanasi is causing immense suffering to local traders and is “not a plan to preserve heritage.”

Calling Dal Mandi a historic marketplace, Yadav demanded an immediate halt to the project. “How can you take away people’s businesses when they are not ready? You can give them shops, but how will you give them customers?” he asked, terming the project a result of the BJP’s “narrow politics.”

"No Right to Snatch Livelihoods"

Yadav accused the government of creating an atmosphere of fear. “Since when did they get the right to snatch someone’s livelihood? Dal Mandi was not built overnight; generations have worked there,” he said, alleging that the BJP is intimidating traders instead of addressing their concerns.

"BJP Trumpets Lies"

The SP chief challenged the BJP to list any significant development work it has completed. He said the government should focus on cleaning the Varuna River and constructing a flyover, adding that the metros in Lucknow, Kanpur, Noida, and Delhi were contributions of the Samajwadi Party. “Had our government returned, the Varanasi Metro would have been running today, and no poor trader’s shop would have been demolished,” he said.

Criticism Over Maharajganj Demolition

Yadav also slammed the administration over a recent demolition in Maharajganj, alleging that officials bulldozed a house without due process and were later forced to compensate the victims. He warned that officials would be held accountable “when the time comes” and expressed solidarity with Dal Mandi traders.

Attacking the BJP further, he said, “Victory couldn’t immortalize Alexander; this government is also going to go. They gave Meerut traders demolition as a return gift. We are preparing to defeat them.”

Taking another jab at the ruling party, he asked, “If you have built something good in Lucknow, show us. Who gave the idea of building a riverfront on the Kukrail drain?”
