UP: Eight workers injured as under-construction bridge collapses in Maharajganj

Maharajganj: As many as eight workers were injured when a portion of an under-construction bridge collapsed in the Pandharpur area of the Maharajganj district, police sources said here on Tuesday.

Police sources said that the bridge is being built above the railway line in Mohanapur village as a part of widening the Gorakhpur-Sonauli National Highway.

Monday Night Collapse

"On Monday night, while the workers were working on this bridge, a part of it collapsed suddenly, due to which the workers were buried under the debris. As soon as the information about the accident was received, local people, police and rescue teams reached the spot," they said.

Police sources said that the debris was removed with the help of a JCB machine, the injured were taken out, and they were immediately brought to the Community Health Centre Bankati, from where the doctors referred them to the district hospital after first aid.

Injured Identified

Police sources said that the injured have been identified as Yogesh (25), Yogesh Kumar (24), Anil (20), Surendra (22), Bal Krishna (30), Tinku (30), Loni (30) and Dharampal (35). "It is being said that the bridge is being constructed by PNC Company.

An investigation into the causes of the accident has been started, and administrative officials are also reaching the spot and taking stock of the situation," they said.

Negligence In Construction

Police sources said that the local villagers have alleged that negligence was being done in the construction work, due to which this incident happened.

"At present, strong security arrangements are being made at the site so that any other untoward incident can be avoided," they said.
