Lucknow: The month of July is going to be financially more heavy for electricity consumers in Uttar Pradesh. This month an additional recovery of 1.97 per cent will be made in the electricity bills, which has been added as fuel surcharge. This recovery is being done for the power supply of April 2025, reports Dynamite News correspondent.
If a consumer monthly bill comes to Rs 1000, then he will have to pay Rs 19.70 extra. This is the third consecutive time that the burden of surcharge has been imposed on electricity consumers. Under this system implemented from April, 4.27% surcharge was collected in the month of June, while 2% was rebated in May.
In January 2025, the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) took an important decision in the third phase of the multi-year distribution tariff revision. Under this, the state's power companies were allowed to charge adjustment surcharge from consumers after three months based on the change in the cost of purchase of fuel and energy. This surcharge is applicable to consumers in the next third month based on the cost of electricity purchase of every month.
State Electricity Consumer Council President Awadhesh Verma has sharply criticized this additional burden. He said, "Power companies owe Rs 33,122 crore to consumers, yet recovery is being made from the general public in the name of surcharge. This is not only unfair, but also against the interests of consumers."
He also demanded that the surcharge should be recovered from the already outstanding amount. This news is a shock for lakhs of electricity consumers of Uttar Pradesh, who are already troubled by inflation. Now it remains to be seen whether the commission reconsiders this or the pockets of consumers will continue to get lighter every month.
It very important to save electricity for the future. To save electricity, focus on reducing consumption by adjusting habits, upgrading to energy-efficient appliances and lighting, and optimising your home's energy usage.
