Lucknow: The cold wave and dense fog continue to wreak havoc in Uttar Pradesh. More than 35 districts of the state, including Lucknow, are currently under the grip of dense fog. The cold has become so intense that people are having to rely on bonfires and heaters. The Meteorological Department says that the cold wave will intensify in the coming days, which may lead to a further drop in minimum temperatures.

Orange Alert Issued in Several Districts

The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for several districts, including Lakhimpur Kheri, Bareilly, and Moradabad. Zero visibility conditions are possible in many parts of the state on December 24 and 25. Due to the dense fog, road and rail traffic are likely to be affected, and people have been advised to be extremely cautious.

Weather Forecast for Coming Days

On Wednesday the weather is expected to remain dry in the western and eastern parts of the state. However, dense to very dense fog is likely in many places in both regions. Clear weather is expected on December 25, 26, and 27, but there is little hope of relief from the fog. According to the Meteorological Department, there will be no major change in the weather in the next two days.

Changes in School Timings

Due to the severe cold and fog, schools for young children have been closed in several districts on the orders of the District Magistrates. In some districts, school timings have been changed. The administration has appealed to parents to protect their children from the cold and not to send them out unnecessarily.

The districts where dense fog is likely include Azamgarh, Mau, Ballia, Deoria, Gorakhpur, Basti, Kushinagar, Gonda, Hardoi, Barabanki, Ayodhya, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Amroha, Sambhal, Budaun, and surrounding areas.

Cold Wave to Continue

While some areas have experienced a slight respite from the cold over the past two days due to sunshine, the biting winds continue to cause intense chill and shivering. Dense fog also blanketed several districts of the state on Tuesday, resulting in extremely low visibility.

Rising AQI in Lucknow a Cause for Concern

In addition to the cold, the air pollution situation in the capital city of Lucknow remains a cause for concern. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the Lalbagh, Talkatora, and Aliganj areas ranged between 235 and 275, falling into the "poor" category. Around 7 PM on Tuesday, the average AQI in Lucknow reached approximately 350, increasing the risk of respiratory problems.

Impact of Western Disturbance

According to the Meteorological Department, the effect of the Western Disturbance will gradually weaken from Wednesday onwards. Due to snowfall in the hilly regions, northerly and westerly winds will prevail in the state, further intensifying the cold. Nighttime temperatures are expected to drop by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. However, there is currently no indication of complete relief from the fog.
