Gorakhpur: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Gorakshpeethadhishwar Yogi Adityanath performed special religious rituals dedicated to Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath at the Gorakhnath Temple in Gorakhpur on Vijayadashami, invoking blessings for public welfare, peace, prosperity and the well-being of the people across the state.
The elaborate ceremony, conducted on Tuesday morning in accordance with the traditional customs of the Gorakshpeeth, lasted more than two hours. Dressed in traditional ceremonial attire, Yogi Adityanath offered prayers to Mahayogi Gorakhnath, revered as an incarnation of Lord Shiva, and followed the established rituals of the Nath sect.
The Vijayadashami observances brought together the temple’s spiritual traditions, Vedic chants and ceremonial music, creating an atmosphere of devotion throughout the temple complex.
The special worship commenced at the Shaktipeeth within the Gorakhnath Temple, where rituals dedicated to Jagatjanani Adishakti had been underway since the beginning of Shardiya Navratri. The Chief Minister performed the prescribed altar worship and offered prayers for the welfare of society before proceeding to the main sanctum of Guru Gorakhnath.
Accompanied by the temple’s chief priest, Yogi Kamalnath, other saints, scholars from the Sanskrit Vidyapeeth and students trained in Vedic recitation, Yogi Adityanath entered the main shrine amid the resonant sounds of conches, drums, bells, damru, trumpets and traditional ceremonial instruments.
Inside the sanctum, the Gorakshpeethadhishwar performed the distinctive worship associated with the Nath tradition. As part of the ritual, he offered a variety of sacred materials, including barley shoots grown at the Shaktipeeth altar during Navratri.
He also performed the aarti and ceremonially waved a chamar as an expression of reverence and devotional service to Guru Gorakhnath. The proceedings reflected the longstanding religious customs of the Gorakshpeeth, one of the prominent spiritual centres associated with the Nath sect.
Following the principal worship, the Chief Minister performed special rituals at several sacred locations within the temple complex. These included the Akhand Jyoti, the continuously burning sacred flame, the idols of various deities, the memorials of Nath sect spiritual figures, the Akhand Dhuna, the sacred fire site, the Yagyashala and Bhim Sarovar.
With folded hands, he also circumambulated Mahayogi Gorakhnath and the other deities as part of the traditional observances. The rituals extended beyond the principal shrine to the memorial sites of revered spiritual leaders who shaped the religious legacy of the Gorakshpeeth.
Yogi Adityanath paid homage to his spiritual mentor, the late Mahant Avaidyanath Ji Maharaj, and his predecessor and grand-guru, the late Mahant Digvijaynath Ji Maharaj.
He also bowed before the image of Yogiraj Baba Gambhirnath Ji Maharaj and other eminent figures of the Nath tradition, performing the prescribed worship and seeking their blessings. The observances underscored the continuity of the spiritual lineage and the importance attached to guru-shishya traditions within the Nath sect.
The entire temple complex resonated with the sounds of traditional instruments throughout the Vijayadashami ceremony. Nagphani, conches, drums, bells, damru, trumpets and a ceremonial band accompanied the religious proceedings, adding to the devotional atmosphere.
The combination of Vedic chanting, ritual worship and traditional musical instruments formed an integral part of the celebrations, reflecting the distinctive cultural and spiritual heritage of the Gorakhnath Temple.
Through the special worship, Yogi Adityanath prayed for a peaceful, happy and prosperous life for the people of Uttar Pradesh. His prayers focused on public welfare and the well-being of society, in keeping with the broader religious significance of Vijayadashami.

As part of the Vijayadashami observances, Yogi Adityanath also visited the temple’s cowshed and performed Gau Pujan, a traditional ritual expressing reverence for cattle. The Chief Minister fed jaggery to the cows and spent time affectionately tending to the cattle during the visit. The ritual highlighted the importance of cow worship and animal care within the temple’s religious practices.
He subsequently visited Bhim Sarovar, where he fed puffed rice to the fish. These activities formed another part of the day’s observances, extending the spirit of devotion and care for living beings beyond the main temple rituals.
The Vijayadashami celebrations at Gorakhnath Temple thus combined traditional worship, reverence for spiritual leaders, Vedic ceremonies and acts of service, with Yogi Adityanath offering prayers for peace, prosperity and collective well-being across Uttar Pradesh.
