MakkuMath: Women from MakkuMath in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district are setting a new benchmark in self reliance by jointly running a homestay named Apnu Ghar. Located in the Ukhimath block, the initiative is entirely managed by six local women who handle everything from welcoming guests and cooking meals to cleanliness and overall operations. Their collective effort has not only created a steady source of income but has also strengthened their confidence and role within the community.

The homestay has been linked to online booking platforms under the National Rural Livelihood Mission, significantly boosting earnings and visibility. Supported by initiatives under MGNREGA, the Women and Child Development Department and Himotthan Society, Apnu Ghar has emerged as a symbol of women empowerment and cultural preservation. Tourists visiting the homestay experience local traditions and rural life, making the project both an economic success and a model for sustainable community based tourism.
