Beijing: A small aircraft crashed into Beijing’s landmark CITIC Tower, popularly known as China Zun, on Friday, triggering panic in the heart of the Chinese capital and prompting a large-scale emergency response.

The aircraft reportedly struck the upper portion of the skyscraper, which serves as the headquarters of the state-owned CITIC Group. Authorities have not confirmed any casualties so far, while the exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined.

Soon after the incident, occupants inside the building were evacuated as a precaution. Firefighters, police personnel and ambulances rushed to the spot as authorities cordoned off the surrounding area and began emergency operations.

Dramatic videos circulating on social media showed debris falling from the upper floors of the building moments after the impact. Some clips appeared to show part of the aircraft near the crash site, while a nearby taxi was reportedly damaged by falling debris. Officials have not yet commented on the authenticity of the videos.

Security around China Zun was tightened after the crash. Several roads leading to the skyscraper were closed as emergency teams carried out rescue and assessment work. Police also asked people to move away from the area while operations continued.

According to media reports, the aircraft may have been a Sunward SA 60L Aurora, a light sport aircraft manufactured in China. Unverified flight tracking data suggested that the aircraft may have deviated from its expected route before hitting the skyscraper. However, official confirmation is still awaited.

The incident has raised serious concerns over aviation safety and airspace monitoring in Beijing’s busy business district.
