New Delhi: The protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar over the alleged NEET paper leak and demands for reforms in the country's examination system intensified on Sunday after social activist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk began an indefinite hunger strike. Student organisations, farmer groups and several khap panchayats also joined the demonstration, increasing pressure on the authorities.
Wangchuk started his fast at around 11 a.m. after the deadline of an ultimatum issued to the government. Speaking at the protest site, he said his hunger strike was not restricted to the NEET controversy alone. According to him, the campaign also seeks greater accountability in India's education system while highlighting concerns related to Ladakh.
His decision drew more supporters to the protest, with students and volunteers gathering in significant numbers throughout the day.
Members of the All India Students' Association (AISA) also launched an indefinite hunger strike in solidarity with Wangchuk. Protesters said they would continue their agitation until the government responds to their demands with concrete measures.
The demonstration has attracted students, youth groups and representatives from various social organisations, all calling for a more transparent and credible examination process.
Delhi Police strengthened security around the protest venue by deploying additional personnel and increasing barricading. Some protesters alleged that authorities were attempting to limit the demonstration area and repeatedly asked participants to disperse through public announcements. Organisers, however, maintained that the protest has remained peaceful.
The movement has also launched a nationwide "Pradhan Go Back" campaign, seeking the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Protesters are demanding a fair investigation into the alleged NEET paper leak, accountability within the National Testing Agency (NTA), stronger safeguards against future examination leaks, and support for affected students and families. Organisers have warned that if no action is taken, a large rally will be held in Delhi next week.
