Dehradun: These days, farmers in Lalkuan area of Uttarakhand are furious. The reason is the embankments and check dams worth crores of rupees built on the banks of the Gaula river, which were washed away in the recent rains. The heavy rain not only swept away these embankments but also several acres of land of the farmers living on the banks of the river were submerged in water. This has caused huge losses to the farmers and now people are openly raising their voice against the government and administration.
The villagers allege that there has been a lot of corruption in the construction of embankments and check dams. They said that neither standards were followed during the work nor attention was paid to quality. Despite spending crores of rupees, the embankments could not withstand even a little pressure of rain. People have accused the contractors and officials of embezzling government money. They also say that all this was done under pressure from local public representatives. Now the farmers and villagers demand that a high-level investigation be conducted into this entire matter and strict action be taken against the culprits.
During this, former block pramukh Sandhya Dalakoti and youth Congress leader Hemvati Nandan Durgapal also raised questions on the administration. They say that every year crores of rupees are spent on building embankments and check dams, but every year as soon as the rains come, all these are washed away. They said that the Congress had raised this matter earlier as well and the District Magistrate had ordered an inquiry, but even after a month has passed, the inquiry is still pending. The leaders have demanded that the inquiry should not only be completed soon but it should also be made public.
Overall, due to the washing away of embankments and check dams built on the Gaula river in Lalkuan, the farmers' lands have been submerged in the river, there has been loss and at the same time the allegations of corruption have increased the problems of the administration. Now everyone's eyes are fixed on when the inquiry is completed and what action is taken against those responsible.
